Wycombe Sound
Wycombe Sound is a multi-award-winning local radio station for High Wycombe and the surrounding areas. We are a community interest company run by volunteers who are passionate about broadcasting and serving our listeners. We offer a variety of programmes, from news and sports to music and entertainment, as well as live commentaries of every Wycombe Wanderers game. We also provide training and opportunities for anyone who wants to get into radio or learn new skills. We are proud to be nominated in the 2023 ARIAS, the Oscars of the radio sector, for best local radio station.
Wycombe Sound started as a pilot in 2013, when we received a Restricted Service Licence to broadcast for four weeks from the Octagon shopping area of the Eden Shopping Centre . The station was officially opened by the Mayor of High Wycombe and featured a variety of local shows and personalities.
In 2014, Wycombe Sound returned for another 4-week pilot broadcast from 19 November to 16 December. The station used 87.9 FM as its frequency once again but this time the studios were based in HWBIDCo’s Enterprise HQ located on Church Street in the town centre.
In 2015, Wycombe Sound went live again for our third and final 4 week pilot from our own permanent studios in the center of High Wycombe, many of the shows from the previous RSLs returned or had been updated with new presenters, program name or new features. The Mayor of High Wycombe once again opened the station on the first day. A brand new radio drama set in High Wycombe was launched called Made In Wycombe which was written especially for Wycombe Sound, it has a cast of 12 and a production crew trained by BBC and ITV.After finishing on 19 December the online and app stream was left on to broadcast music and best bits from over the last 3 RSLs and the occasional special live show.
In April 2016, Wycombe Sound was granted a full five-year Community Licence by Ofcom and launched on 106.6 FM on 31 October 2016. Since then, the station has grown its audience and reputation, winning several awards and nominations, including the Station of the Year Award at the Community Radio Awards in 2017 and the John Myers Award for Best Local Radio Station at the Audio and Radio Industry Awards in 2020.
