Wycombe Sound was founded in 2013 and completed 3 RSL (Restricted Service Licence) before being granted a 5-year licence and in 2017 winning station of the year
We began our first four-week RSL (Restricted Service Licence) broadcast from the Octagon shopping area of Eden on the 9th December 2013 with The Mayor of High Wycombe opening the station live on The Breakfast Show. Over the four weeks, a whole range of shows were broadcast live including multiple local debate shows, local sport shows, breakfast and drivetime shows.
We returned in 2014 for our second RSL. Located in BidCoís Enterprise HQ; once again a whole range of shows were broadcast with The Mayor of High Wycombe, Eric Knowles, Colin Baker and many of the local businesses and personalities joining in over the 4 week period.
We returned for another four-week RSL in 2015. Once again broadcasting on 87.9fm, online and via our App new for the third RSL. It was also our first year broadcasting from our own permanent studios. Many of the shows from the previous RSLís returned and The Mayor of High Wycombe once again opened the station on the first day. A brand new radio drama set in High Wycombe was launched called ëMade In Wycombeí which was written especially for Wycombe Sound, it has a cast of 12 and a production crew trained by the BBC and ITV.
We spent the first part of 2016 waiting for a communication from Ofcom about our application. In April we received a phone call from Ofcom about our application. We were successful and so we now have a long-term community radio licence. We were one of the first 10 stations in SE England to receive such a licence.
After 6 months, which was mostly spent making our transmitter was safely and securely installed and ensuring that we could get the signal from the studio to the transmitter, we were finally given the go-ahead to start transmitting by Ofcom in mid-October. After a week of testing the signal, we decided to switch on the FM transmitter on 31 October. We are now broadcasting on 106.6 FM in the Wycombe area and a bit beyond as well. The key difference this time is that after 28 days we will NOT be switching the station off air, we will continue broadcasting for many more months and years
In August 2017 Wycombe Sound 106.6FM was shortlisted in 7 categories of the Community Radio Awards: Station of the Year, Community Programme, Sports Programme, Speech & Journalism, Best Male Presenter, Best Female Presenter and Innovation.
